Precision Ground Stones

Surface-ground abrasive stones are useful tools for deburring and cleaning precision metal parts and tools. Unlike normal abrasive stones, they won't alter the geometry because they only abrade raised areas (such as small burrs or the edges of a damaged corner). They won't scratch because the stones are always used in pairs, which are rubbed together before use to remove contamination.

These stones will allow you to maintain precision tools, such as levels, parallels, magnetic chucks, and milling machine tables.

I offer pairs of both natural and synthetic precision-ground abrasive stones. (Precision-ground stones are always supplied in pairs.)

The natural stones are quarried in the French Pyrenees and the synthetic are produced by Tyrolit.

The natural Pyrenees stones work best on ground or finely milled surfaces, while rougher or oily surfaces and softer materials are better matched to aluminum oxide (synthetic) stones from Tyrolit.

The natural stones have some variation in color and will show superficial scratches, but this does not influence their function. The synthetic stones have a more uniform appearance, but a slightly more aggressive cutting action and a more open grain; they also have less tendency to load up with soft materials.

When treated with care, the stones should provide years of service. (It is possible to regrind the stones, should this prove necessary.)

They are best cleaned using an ultrasonic cleaner, although simply rubbing two stones together with white spirits will remove much of the accumulated metal.
